Day 8 - Hiroshima Side to Miyajima
Day 8 - Hiroshima Side to Miyajima

After the Atomic Dome, probably the most visited site around Hiroshima is the ancient shrine, Itsukushima Jinja, with it's huge off-shore bright orange Torii (gate). It takes about 30 minutes by what is essentially a commuter train and a short ferry ride to the island.

Day 7 - To Hiroshima Dome / Castle
Day 7 - To Hiroshima Dome / Castle

Time to move on from Fukuoka where we could have spent more time to further explore Kyushu - more ideas for the future. Next stop on the schedule is Hiroshima, another city neither Nobue or I have visited. Exploring the memories that still linger there is top of mind going there.

Hiroshima is a short hour and 30 minute Shinkansen ride from Hakata station in Fukuoka.

Day 6b - Hakata History
Day 6b - Hakata History

It was still early after we got back to Fukuoka from Dazaifu so needed to fill time before dinner. Naturally this means more exploring and there were parts of Hakata, the center of Fukuoka, that had some interesting sites.

Day 6a - Dazaifu for some Knowledge
Day 6a - Dazaifu for some Knowledge

On today's schedule is a day trip to the city of Dazaifu, about 30 minutes from Fukuoka, home of one of the oldest and most important Shinto shrines - Dazaifu Tenmangu. It is dedicate to Tenjin, a spirit/god representing knowledge and draws many, many students before the various entry exams.
